History
Popularly known as the Seven Churches, the Basilica of Santo Stefano is a unique complex built from the 4th-5th century, according to tradition on the initiative of Saint Petronius, who wanted to recreate in Bologna the topography of the holy sites of Jerusalem (hence the old name 'Holy Jerusalem'). Of the original seven churches, four remain today, linked by a path of courtyards, crypts and cloisters.
